Carter's Call for May 26, 2010

Where's the spring gone? I'm amazed we've already hit district and regional tournament weeks for high school sports.

With so many sports and teams to cover, high school sports can run you ragged. But I'm a high school sports junkie and wouldn't have it any other way!

In just a few weeks, we'll be crowning 2010 state champions. And there are lots of area teams in my opinion who can win it all. The E.C. Glass girls and boys tennis teams are strong again this season, they've got a shot.

JF baseball, with some of the best starting pitchers I've seen in a lot of years, is very solid and has a great chance. After last year, I wouldn't count out Rustburg, either. The Red Devils know how to deliver in the clutch.

On the southside, Tunstall is having another super year, Barry Shelton and the Trojans certainly no strangers to winning state championships.

Soccer, JF and E.C. Glass have been the class of the sport in Central Virginia, the boys and girls teams. The JF boys knocked off perennial power Blacksburg earlier this spring, that's quite an accomplishment in itself. Should be interesting to see how far those teams can advance in the regionals and possibly state playoffs.

Softball, I know Amherst County and Liberty have had some epic battles this season, both could do some damage in the playoffs. It's alright to have a slip-up or two in the regular season, but hopefully you've gotten that out of your system now. Once you work your way through district tournaments and start seeing new teams, you better bring your best stuff every night because one bad night and you're on the outside looking in.

NFL owners have awarded the 2014 Super Bowl to the Meadowlands in New Jersey, the new home of the Jets and Giants. A gamble? I'd say. The Meadowlands the first cold-weather site for an outdoor Super Bowl. The average low in the area in early February is in the low 20's. If the weather's really bad on Super Bowl weekend, will fans decide to stay away?

Not likely after they've forked over BIG BUCKS for tickets, hotels, and everything else that is the Super Bowl.

And for the teams, do you want your Super Bowl chances affected by the elements?

A bitterly cold or snowy day could certainly do that.

We're working with a lot of "ifs" here, who knows, it could be a great day with temperatures in the 50's! I kind of like the intrigue here and really wouldn't mind seeing players take on the weather and even a little snow.

I plan to be nice and warm inside watching the game.
