Carter's Call for September 1, 2010

Those big broad smiles you're seeing among sports fans can mean just one thing. Football is officially BACK!

The Football Friday high school season kicked off last week, college football's opening weekend is this weekend and the NFL openers are next weekend.

Are you ready for some football? Bring it on!

This will be a busy, but fun weekend for me straight ahead. Start it with Football Friday, then Saturday I'll head to Charlottesville for Mike London's debut as UVa head coach against his old team, the Richmond Spiders.

After driving my son back to college on Sunday, it's back on the road Monday to Landover, Maryland for the Top 10 clash at FedEx Field between number 3 Boise State and 10th-ranked Virginia Tech. I've noticed most of the so-called experts are picking Boise State to win.

I think they're wrong.

While the Hokies defense may have trouble stopping the Broncos, I think the same will be true for Boise State's defense trying to stop Tyrod Taylor and company, even more so.

If Boise stacks the box and tries to shut down Ryan Williams and Darren Evans on the ground, Tyrod is poised enough now to beat you with his arm. I can't see the Broncos stopping both the run and pass. Don't be surprised if both teams score a lot of points, but I think Tech will score more.

As for UVa and Richmond, I think the Cavs will make Mike London a winner in his Virginia debut. And don't be surprised if UVa looks good doing it. Should be a great atmosphere in Charlottesville Saturday night as the Mike London era officially kicks off.

Saturday afternoon, Liberty and VMI both kick off their seasons.

The Flames host St. Francis, PA at noon at Lynchburg City Stadium while the renovations continue at LU's stadium. This one should be ugly, the Flames appear to have way too many weapons for St. Francis.

VMI opens at home at 1:30 against Lock Haven, look for the Keydets to open their year with a victory.

Welcome back football, we've missed 'ya!
