Lynchburg, VA - Fifty years ago Tuesday, six college students, majority of them white, made history by standing up for Civil Rights.

It was December 14, 1960 when the students held a sit-in at Patterson's Drug Store on Main Street.

They sat at the counter and ordered food and beverages but then, gave the items to African Americans.

Police were called and the students were asked to leave. They refused and were arrested. It was a historic event, Civil Rights Activist Garnell Stamps says he is proud he lived though.

"One can only be proud of the fact that incident did happen and that progress has been made. Can you believe that we now have in drug stores, managers who are African American's and other minorities?" Civil Rights Activist Garnell Stamps said.
