Justin Case for January 25, 2011

Posted:

After a hiatus the Justin Case blog is back.

Since we last talked, Virginia Tech got drubbed by Stanford, the Hokie basketball team has inched closer to the Top 25, UVa has picked up some ACC wins and Liberty is exceeding expectations in the Big South.

Simply put, VT's Orange Bowl loss was embarrassing. They los 40-12 but the point differential seemed worse than that. Tyrod Taylor had a spin-o-rama play in the first half that will be remembered by Hokie fans forever but Andrew Luck was the best QB on the field.and he decided to come back and NOT go to the NFL.

To basketball.VT is down to 8 healthy scholarship players but those 8 are playing well. They've won 9 of their last 10 games. Erick Green has been the catalyst in most of those wins. He was the ACC Player of the Week this week. VT has 11 games left. If they go 8-3 that would put them at 21-8 going into the ACC Tournament. Is that good enough for an NCAA bid? VT hasn't been to the NCAAs in 3 years.

UVa is up and coming. They're not going to the NCAAs this year but they have promise for the future. They'll probably win a game they shouldn't and lose a game they shouldn't throughout the rest of the season but if UVa continues to battle-test itself that's a good thing for Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers. In Feb. they get FSU, Duke and VT back-to-back-to-back. That should be a good barometer as to how good UVa is compared to the top ACC teams.

In the Big South, Liberty has been surprising. Dale Layer admits they're a young team but they're playing very well in conference play. They're 8-1 in the Big South and have a game against first place Coastal next Thursday at Coastal. (LU lost the first meeting in Lynchburg). Jesse Sanders is their go-to guy but David Minaya and Evan Gordon deliver night in and night out.
