Ahhh... spring is here and I couldn't be happier. I love the outdoors in all types of weather, but certainly spring is a great balance of weather that lets my daughter and I get out and get some camping in.
We actually broke the ice this year (literally) March 18th when I got a half day off and we pitched the tent for our first foray of the year. We froze.
So, now that spring is here, we're in the clear! One of the best parts about this time of year is something most of you don't even realize is happening.
After the next batch of warm weather, you can expect to start seeing the very delicious morel mushrooms start to pop out. Morels are a very sought after, very yummy treat that only come out for about three weeks out of the year, then they're gone.

My guess is that starting this weekend through the last week in April will be the time to get out hunting.
Growing up in Michigan, my grandfather used to take me mushroom hunting. He always said I had a good eye for them, as they are difficult to find because they blend in well with the fallen leaves.
But they are worth the effort. Consider that high end restaurants pay as much as $50 per pound for them... you can imagine they taste every bit as good as that $50 price suggests.
Where to look? Well, most folks will not give up such a secret. It is serious business for some people. My suggestion is you wait for a few warm days then get out into the woods for a nice hike. Keep an eye around the base of poplar and apple trees and you might get lucky. They come in brown, gold, yellow and black. But beware!!! There are "false morels" out there that are poisonous!! So, do your research and good luck!
