Carter's Call for April 7, 2011

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Jefferson Forest swimmer Susanna White. She told me last week she really hoped she could go out with a bang in her final YMCA National Swim Meet in Fort Lauderdale. Did she ever! The University of Arkansas-bound swimmer captured the GOLD MEDAL in the 200 Individual Medley AND broke the YMCA national record in the process. Then just 15 minutes later, she won the silver medal in the 50 free, all this against the top young swimmers in the country. Brookville swimmer Kemp Pettyjohn, headed to William & Mary this fall, also took fourth in the men's 500 free. V.E.S. swimmer Andrew Cook, headed to Old Dominion, placed 12th in the 500 while JF junior Caleb Williams took 16th. The Lynchburg Y team is loaded with great talent this year!

Butler sure picked a bad time to have its worst shooting night of the season, in the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. After nearly beating Duke in last year's title game, the Bulldogs had a miserable night against UConn this year, hitting just 18.8 percent of their shots for the game, the worst shooting percentage in title game history. Butler was missing 3's, 2's, even layups. But give the Huskies a lot of credit for creating havoc for the Bulldogs. Connecticut's defense, especially in the second half, was as good as I've seen this entire season. The Huskies were aggressive, all over the Bulldogs even in three-point territory, their defense really confused and frustrated Butler most of the night. Jim Calhoun gets his third national championship, now we'll wait to see if that's enough or if Calhoun will come back for more.

I'm excited for the area baseball season, the Hillcats and Salem Red Sox ready to crank up their years. Lynchburg's team will have all new players this year, the Hillcats now an Atlanta Braves affiliate. Some of last year's Danville Braves are on the opening day roster, along with former UVa star Phil Gosselin and one-time Liberty Flames pitcher Andrew Wilson. And while we're talking baseball, I've got to give a shout-out to my partner Justin Feldkamp, who won the Hillcats media home run contest for the third straight year! Feldkamp gets the TRIFECTA!!!

And some football to wrap it up, former LCA standout Michael Rocco had a good spring game at quarterback for UVa and could be on his way to earning the starting job for the Cavaliers. Wouldn't that be something if it's Rocco for UVa and former Brookville star Logan Thomas for Virginia Tech when the two state rivals face off in the regular season finale in November? That sure would be great to see for Lynchburg fans. But as both players and their coaches will tell you, it's a long time between now and late November... keep your fingers crossed!
