Graduation Day by Bill Foy

Posted:

I'm off to Blacksburg this afternoon for what feels like the final step in a really, really long journey. Tonight, my youngest graduates from Virginia Tech and for the first time in what seems like forever, I won't have any children in school.

And what a journey it has been. Way back in September of 1986, my oldest son headed off to kindergarten at Beverly Woods Elementary School in Charlotte. Along the way as parents, we had the opportunity to meet some of the best and most interesting teachers, coaches and administrators you can imagine. Good, caring people like Larry Parpart, Drew Bright, and Carol Crowder. Legendary instructors, including Civil War professor Bud Robertson. Coaches who always found ways to keep sports in perspective like Bill Butler, Bob Brinkley, and Brad King. Principals, always willing to listen, including Pat Sales, Bob Tyson and Dee Dee Kagey.

And beyond all of the really outstanding people were outstanding schools. Places like Penn Forest and Tuckahoe Elementary, Cave Spring and Douglas Freeman High. After 25 years, I'm pretty sure I disagree with the critics who say public schools aren't getting the job done. My family will forever be indebted to these educators and these schools that have made such a difference in our lives. The character, the values, and the ideals they shared will always have meaning.

As we pause on Graduation Day 2011, we extend thanks to everyone who played a part in this process.
