Halifax Co., VA - For two years, the family of Hattie Brown has waited for answers. Now, on this two year anniversary of her disappearance, they still don't know what happened to her.
The 48-year-old Halifax woman was last seen in South Boston with her nephew, Derek Brown. Dereck was later named a suspect, and investigators say he has been jailed on a firearms charge that they believe is related to Hattie's disappearance.
Two years later, and time hasn't made things easier for Hattie Brown's family. If anything, Hattie's sister, Diane Brown, says it's made it worse.
"It's hard to believe it's been two years, and still nothing," said Diane Brown. "It's not a day that goes by that we don't think about her. Not just once a day, several times a day."
Diane Brown says her sister cheated death twice during her 18 years in the Army.
"She spent, put 18 years of her life on the line fighting for her country and it's been two years and we can't even locate her. It's just been hard, it's just been so, so hard. She truly didn't deserve this," she said.
Brown says she knows in her heart that her sister is gone. More than anything, she says the family just prays to find a body.
"She's no longer with us physically, but if we could just find her body, so we can give her a decent memorial," she said.
Officials have searched on the ground and in the water. They say they won't give up, as long as they have information to go by.
"We have secured a volume of information and we continue to validate that information or try to validate it," said Special Agent Troy LaRue of Virginia State Police.
"We're going to cling to faith and hope and we will never ever give up," said Diane Brown.
Derek Brown will be tried on a firearms charge in July. Investigators say there's someone out there with information, and they'll pay $10,000 for it, if it'll lead to an arrest and conviction.
