Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University is about to install a tunnel under the Norfolk-Southern railroad line near campus so students can get to the soon-to-be-built bridge over Wards Road.
It'll get carved out near the Vitamin Shoppe on Wards Road.
After three-and-a-half years of talks with the railroad, they're just waiting for some final paperwork to go through. After that, the tunnel itself takes just 10 days to dig. It's a $2 million dollar tunnel, and contractors say well worth it for students.
"Now, they'll be able to get there in a much more convenient and safe manner to go over and have an ice-cream, or a Starbucks coffee or a chic-fil-A. It'll mean a lot to them," said Charles Spence, Director of Planning/Construction at Liberty University.
The tunnel and the Wards Road pedestrian bridge are both expected to be complete this Fall when students return to campus.
