Bedford, VA - Several local veterans will now have a much easier time thanks to a boy scout's project.
With help from his family and friends, 13-year-old Erik Smith built a handicap ramp at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Bedford. On Monday, the city building inspector approved it for use.
Smith's parents say he organized the project on his own even raising $2,000 for all the materials.
"The veterans were very impressed that a youngster would take the time to do something this nice for them," said Robert Smith, Member of VFW Post 2157.
"A lot of people in my life are veterans so I always thought about helping them. My neighbor is a veteran and he came here so I thought it would be nice since not many of them can get up the stairs," said Erik Smith, Boy Scout who organized the ramp project.
Smith hopes the project will earn him an Eagle Scout ranking. He'll be judged in the next few weeks.
