Carter's Call for June 29, 2011

While UVa baseball came up short of winning this year's national championship, the Cavaliers had one whale of a year on the diamond.

Virginia finished off its best season ever 56-and-12 overall, a season that saw the Cavs ranked number one in the country for most of the year and seeded number one in the postseason.

Defending national champion South Carolina needed 13 innings to finally beat Virginia last Friday night 3-2, the Gamecocks handed the Cavs both their losses in the College World Series. Friday night's really stung with UVa loading the bases in the 10th, 12th and 13th and failing to score on all three occasions. Virginia loaded the bags in the 13th with nobody out but South Carolina escaped, then took advantage of two throwing errors in the bottom of the inning to win it.

They say sometimes you have to be there and knock on the door several times before you bust it down. The Cavs have made it to the World Series now twice, who knows maybe the third time will be the charm.

With the Appalachian League season now underway, area fans have all kinds of baseball to check out. You can see Lynchburg and Salem in the Carolina League, Danville and Pulaski in the Appy League, the Martinsville Mustangs summer league college action, American Legion ball and more. Lynchburg is hosting the American Legion state tournament this year beginning July 25th.

The State Amateur Golf Tournament is this week in Bristol.

Martinsville's Keith Decker is one of those off to a good start in medal play, firing a first-day 3-under 68. Two-time defending CVIGT champ Lee Fisher opened with a 1-over 72, the top 32 after Wednesday's second round of medal play advance to match play beginning Thursday.

I actually got out this past weekend and played golf for just the second time this year. I knew it was going to be ugly... and it was. I did break 100, barely, but still managed to have a great time, even snuck in a birdie along the way. But those 6's and 7's sure add up quickly!

And if you missed it, Virginia Tech will get another shot at Alabama on the gridiron. The two will square off in the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Season Kickoff in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide beat the Hokies in the 2009 opener 34-24 en route to winning the national championship.

That's it for now. Enjoy your summer, and if you play golf, please get out more than twice this summer. Your scorecard will thank you.
