The Latest Newsroom Craze by Scott Wilson

I have to admit – I've gotten caught up in the newsroom's latest craze. I have been a golfer most of my life, but until last week I had never taken up Frisbee golf (or disc golf, or frolfing – whatever you want to call it). But some of my friends here at the station had been raving about it, so I gave it a try.

Round 1 was at Randolph College, a 9 hole course that just opened last year. It was a perfect course for a true beginner, with a lot of open space and not too many long holes. Still, it was pretty challenging. I threw one at a 45 degree angle right into a tree. But I did have one moment of glory – a perfect throw from about 40 feet out right into the basket. I'm pretty sure that's never going to happen again. You'd think that Frisbee golf is pretty simple – you just throw a disc as hard as you can. But there is a skill to it – you have drivers and putters, you can throw a tomahawk, sidearm, underhand, or whatever combination of running and heaving that my friend Amy uses.

Round 2 was at Peaks View Park, a much more different animal. This is an 18 hole course with many holes winding through the woods. If you are able to go a couple holes without hitting a tree, you are pretty lucky. And as light was fading away, finding even a bright orange disc in the woods became pretty difficult. That was definitely a blow to the ego, as I got more and more over par. At one point, I just stopped keeping score.

What makes Frisbee golf great is that it's free, it's outdoors, it's not that time consuming, and it's a good competitive event with friends. And of course it's not without a little element of danger – you have to keep your head on a swivel the whole time to make sure you don't get hit in the head. I read an article a few days ago about how Frisbee golf was very popular about 25 years ago, but faded and is now making a comeback. If our newsroom is any indication, the game may grow even more in the near future.

My next step is going out and buying my own discs, and then trying the course at Liberty University. Maybe I'll see you on the course!
