Hector Gomez went 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven runs batted in to help the Tulsa Drillers to a 13-8 victory Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Springfield.
Gomez, who entered the game with a .209 batting average, raised his season average by 12 percentage points with the big night, which included a two-run shot in the second inning and a grand slam in the third.
He also had a single and a double in the contest.
Teammate Wilin Rosario also had four hits in the game as the Drillers pounded Springfield pitchers for 15 hits.
After Gomez's 2-run homer made it 2-0 after the second inning, Tulsa scored seven more times in the third to make it 9-0.
Springfield would score six unanswered runs to make things interesting, but the Drillers would hold on for their second straight victory.
The win pulls Tulsa within two games of first place Arkansas, which lost for a second straight outing Monday night at Northwest Arkansas.
The Drillers and Cardinals will continue their series Tuesday night at 7:07 p.m.
