Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg's Salvation Army is helping to bridge a need in the community.
Sunday, they held a back-to-school giveaway. More than fifty backpacks, filled with school supplies were given to area children. Event organizers said they began collecting items last week.
The initial goal was to fill the Salvation Army School bus with goodies. By the end of the week, the bus was nearly full. Major Fred Thornhill, Commanding Officer at the Lynchburg Salvation Army said about the community, "I cannot say enough about Lynchburg, Virginia. The support that they give to the Salvation Army. We get the word out, they come and help. If we need food, they're there with food. If we need items for school, they're here with items for school. It's just phenomenal."
Children who were unable to receive a back pack didn't walk away empty handed.
There were extra supplies handed out. By the end of the day, nearly seventy area kids were stocked with supplies for their first day of school.
