Hats off to Madison Heights for again hosting a great Dixie World Series!
No wonder this town has gotten several opportunities in recent years to be a host. They do things right, and when you treat people right, they remember and spread the word, further enhancing your town's image.
It was great to see such a big crowd at Tuesday night's Madison Heights/Florida game.
Fans are really coming out to support these kids, and they deserve it! These 11-and-12-year-olds can play some baseball.
As I write this, the host team Madison Heights is the only undefeated team out of the 16 who began the tourney last weekend. Wouldn't that be something if the local team wins it all!
The Lynchburg Hillcats are quietly making a late charge to earn a playoff spot.Tuesday night's 9-0 Lynchburg win over Kinston, coupled with Potomac losing to Salem, has the Hillcats within four games of the Nationals for second place in the division, still with 25 to play.
First-place Frederick won the first half, so if they take the second half as well, the second playoff spot goes to the second place team. The Hillcats have won six of their last seven and could be coming together at just the right time.
Falling River Country Club pro Faber Jamerson of Appomattox tees it up this week with the big boys in the PGA Championship in Atlanta.
You might remember Faber qualified for the PGA by finishing second in the PGA Pro National Championship a few weeks back. Justin Feldkamp recently spoke with Faber, and is spotlighting the former JMU standout Wednesday night, August 10 on the 6:00 p.m. news. You can also check out the story on our web site. Good luck to Faber in Atlanta this week.
A few observations from taking in lots of high school football practices in the past week and a half:
LCA is huge on the line! The Bulldogs have passed a lot in recent years, and why wouldn't you with Mike Rocco and Seth Good as your quarterback? I'm sure they'll continue to pass, but don't be shocked if they try and let their big boys run over people up front and spring their running backs.
A couple of Seminole teams will try and wipe out bad memories of 2-and-8 seasons a year ago, JF and Rustburg. I look for both those teams to be much better this season.
Don't forget to see when we'll be spotlighting your favorite team on our Football Friday Previews, just check out the preview schedule here.
And the folks at Boonsboro Country Club are going to be thrilled with their new indoor tennis facility. Boonsboro General Manager Brad Barden and Director of Tennis Drew Robinson gave me a tour of the new digs earlier this week. The place is beautiful, more than 22,000 sq. ft., four indoor courts with an elevated mezzanine level for viewing, also two new specially-irrigated outdoor courts. Robinson says it's a first-class facility that you could put anywhere in America and be proud of it. From my first look, I'd have to agree.
Football Friday's Season Opener Preview Show is one week from Friday, August 19! I'm ready for some football!
