Lynchburg, VA - The Virginia 10 Miler is growing this year with two new races for the kids.

Students at James River Day School are ready to race the Amazing Mile Children's Run.

Third grader Row Sterne and seventh grader Mitch McMahon are just two of the kids training.

"I've been running for 4 miles," said Sterne.

"I usually run a mile on the treadmill and in my neighborhood," said McMahon.

The older cross country team is helping to get the younger students involved. Coach Donna Hodgert says they'll train once a week with students in kindergarten to third grade.

"The James River Day School is really supportive. A lot of them live along the course and a lot of families participate in the Amazing Mile for health reasons," said Hodgert. "Running is a family event."

This year organizers from Amazement Square hope even more of the family can get involved. Melissa Zadell, an organizer, said they're adding a quarter mile race for kids 5 and younger and a half mile race for kids between 6 and 9 years old.

"We wanted to make sure that every child had something they could be successful at," said Zadell.

Whether your kids race or not, Amazement Square will also be full of actives that are hands on, healthy, and free, including a concert with Rockasaurus.

"It sets the stage for children to incorporate activity as a normal part of their day. To have a positive attitude towards exercise, being outside and being healthy. It's also something the whole family can do together," said Zadell.

If your kids need a little encouragement to sign up for this year's races, take some from the experts at James River Day School like first grader Alex Sterne.

"It's really fun and people cheer for me," said Sterne.

All three children's races are on Friday, September 23 at Amazement Square and Riverfront Park, which will also host the Virginia 10 Miler packet pick-up and a festival.
