Campbell Co., VA - The Rustburg High School sports complex has been renamed in honor of the former school principal and now county supervisor.

Hugh Pendleton, a Campbell County resident, spent most of his life educating and serving his community.

"I was floored," said Pendleton said."I didn't really do anything on my own. I just had some awful good people over the years to work with."

The former administrator is humbled by this big honor and says he couldn't have done it without the support from others.

"The beauty of it is, it came from the people I care very much for and work with for all those years," said Pendleton.

Pendleton has spent 40 years in Campbell County as a teacher and administrator.

"I enjoyed every minute of everything I did, and if I had the chance, I'd do it all over again," said Pendleton.

On Friday, August 26, the school announced the "Hugh Pendleton Sports Complex" at halftime of the football game.

"I'm deeply honored. I still give credit to the people I worked with more so than myself," said Pendleton.

The community awarded him with this distinction for all his efforts, including his role in helping to integrate schools in Campbell County in 1970.

The district consolidated five schools into four, moving African-Americans out of Campbell County High School into the other four.

"It was fun to be a part of it. I had so much cooperation and help along the way," said Pendleton.

But folks here know Pendleton himself did much more than he is letting on.

Pendleton says another favorite milestone happened in the 80s when the old Campbell County High School was remodeled and new buildings were built around it.
