Amherst County Depot Project Moving Forward

Posted:

Amherst Co., VA - After ten years of debate and discussion, Amherst County leaders say they're finally moving forward with a plan for their old train depot.

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors finalized a deal to buy 4.2 acres at the corner of Route 29 and Route 60. The county is paying $130,000 for the land.

The depot was moved there a few years ago.

The county plans to make it into a welcome center.  It may also house the local Chamber of Commerce.

Leaders say it never should have taken this long.

"The project actually ended up being a lot more costly than I think they ever expected in the beginning.  At the beginning, they thought it was going to be a very simple project," said Amherst County Supervisor Claudia Tucker.

The county is using state and federal funding, so the building can only be used by non-profit groups.
