Roanoke, VA - For the past few months, Downtown Roanoke Incorporated has been trading credit and food stamps for wooden dollars that can be used with market vendors.
Shoppers using SNAP benefits must shop within benefit guidelines.
Officials say the program has been a huge success.
"It's been spectacular. The market vendors have really enjoyed it. It has been a great way to get them involved and get a little bit healthier food on the table for some of the lower income folks," said Matt Klepeisz with Downtown Roanoke, Inc.
Vendors will direct shoppers to Downtown Roanoke Incorporated's office six days a week. The program is averaging $1,000 in food stamp trades and $3,000 in credit card sales every month.
