Danville, VA - The Danville Fire Department was honored in Richmond with the 2011 Governor's Technology Award.
The fire department integrates modern electronics with their current fire trucks in collaboration with the city's IT department. This allows firefighters to have digital information on the scene about the structure they will enter. Before this technology, firefighters had to rely on a paper process for that information.
"They have more information on the scene. They can respond much more quickly. And they have because they have that information they can do a much better job at being more proactive at being available quicker on the scene," said Inez Harville, director of Information Technology.
The technology has been in production for nearly four years.
