Bedford Co., VA - Some Bedford County residents are trying their best to mend Sunday after one of their own was brutally beaten and robbed.

Bob Terry, 81, was beat and robbed Saturday night outside his country store on Dickerson Mill Road around 9 p.m.

A family member of Terry says that he is in critical condition at Carillion Roanoke Hospital. His face and head are severely injured, and those who knew him are so shaken they can barely speak.

Jamie Hill lives within walking distance of the store.

"It was just wrong it was evil," said Hill.

Her mother Shirley Hill couldn't believe the news.

"It's awful," Shirley Hill said. "I don't know what else to say."

Locals couldn't figure out why this closed sign was hanging on the front of Terry's Country's store Sunday until they realized that the hear-say was in fact a reality.

"I was just shocked, horrified and stunned," said Jamie Hill.

Many say it's really shocking that the attacker was hiding in this parking lot behind me, near Bob's car.

"Who's to say that same person or individuals or persons are not lurking around here somewhere and they can also jump one of us," Shirley Hill said.

They can't understand why someone would attack Bob Terry.

"He's somebody's grand-daddy," Jamie Hill said. "This is a horribly sick person."

They also say it's unpredictable. Terry's country store is off the beaten path, and it's the only one for miles.

"He knew everybody around," said Ronald Durham, Terry's friend.

He is known as someone who lets his customers take items and pay later with no questions asked.

"When you come back with the money, he would take the receipt off and clear you of it," said Durham.

Right now there's just too many questions and not enough answers, but there's one thing they do know:

"Justice will be delivered," Jamie Hill said. "You will be found."

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office says that the suspect is stocky and was wearing a hoodie. Officials say he fled from the store on foot after he attacked Terry. Terry was able to escape his attacker, and he ran to a house across the road for help.

Anyone with information should call the Bedford County Sheriff's Office at 540-586-7827.
