Amherst Co., VA – A man was killed in a car accident Tuesday morning at the intersection of Riverville Road and Piedmont Road.
Phillip Sparrow, 55, died instantly when police say a fully-loaded logging truck t-boned his car.
People in the area say they were stunned by the news but not surprised because they say they knew it would happen sooner or later. They say the factors at that intersection are the perfect mix to cause a fatality.
"He didn't stop so the truck just hit him and it drug him clean up here and ran over the top of him," said Angela Whitehead.
Whitehead says she saw the whole thing from her front porch. It only took an instant to leave behind a hunk of twisted metal and a family in grief.
"You can see what happened for yourself, it's a bad place," said a man identifying himself as the victim's uncle.
He admits he already knew this intersection is dangerous.
"No, you can't see too much around through here," said the uncle of Phillip Sparrow.
"When you pull off of 600, you have to pull almost completely out in this road right here to see if a truck is coming," said Whitehead.
Whitehead says sometimes those trucks are really coming fast.
"They come down here doing every bit of 75. It's only a 45 for them but they push 75 up here all the time," said Whitehead.
Whitehead is hoping this tragedy will help convince VDOT to make this a four way stop, to make sure no one else loses their life.
"Cause I'm scared every time I come out of here," said Whitehead.
The Amherst County Sheriff's Office says the initial findings show Tuesday's wreck was not caused by excessive speed or not being able to see the truck.
The county has also recently completed a speed analysis in that area and deputies say they found there is not a speeding problem at that intersection.
