Carter's Call for October 20, 2011

Who will emerge as "Mr. October" in this year's World Series?

It always seems an unlikely hero comes to the surface and leads his team to victory. It'll be fun to see who that player is, or maybe players. St. Louis won the opener last night and if the Cards win tonight and grab a 2-0 lead, the Rangers will have their work cut out. I'll stick with my Texas pick, I just think after the Rangers got to the Series and lost last year, they'll find a way to win it this time.

Virginia teams came up big last weekend in college football.

Among the winners:

1 - Virginia upset #12 Georgia Tech 24-21

2 - Virginia Tech won at Wake Forest 38-17

3 - Liberty routed #20 Coastal Carolina 63-27

4 - VMI got its first win of the season 21-17 over Charleston Southern

Now we'll see if they can follow up those wins with victories this weekend. UVa, VT and VMI are all home while Liberty hits the road to face a 0-and-6 Charleston Southern team. All Danny Rocco has to do though, to get his players to take CSU seriously is remind them what happened the last time they played in Charleston just two years ago. The Flames won, but had to score in the final four minutes to squeak out a 20-13 win.

Football Friday enters its NINTH week this Friday night. Seems like it oughta be Week 4 or 5, the season is really flying by! Before you know it, the playoffs will be here.

I covered the Brookville/Amherst County game last Friday, and you can't help but be impressed with the Bees this season. They can throw it better than most and run it with the best. And the group that gets overlooked is Brookville's defense. They've got some playmakers who deliver week after week. I think the Bees have a great chance to go unbeaten in the regular season, they do have to get by a much-improved Heritage bunch this Friday night. Some of the other standout teams in the area so far include Christiansburg, Northside, Magna Vista, L.C.A, Gretna and Appomattox County.

The Sprint Cup Chase is going to be exciting down the stretch and Martinsville Speedway is a key piece in the puzzle, race seven in the 10-race Chase. Carl Edwards is hanging on to the lead but he'll have to run stronger at Martinsville to keep it. You never count out Jimmie Johnson even though he's back in eighth, but my pick to win the Chase this year is Kevin Harvick. Harvick won the last race at Martinsville back in the spring and he's been really consistent this season.

And this is an exciting time for my sports partner Justin Feldkamp. He and his wife Kimberly are expecting their first child any day now, Saturday is the due date. So if by chance you don't see Justin on Football Friday or anchoring this weekend, you'll know why.

This is one event you just can't miss! Congrats to Kimberly and Justin.
