Community Helps Run Store as Owner Recovers From Beating

Bedford Co., VA - Family and friends in Moneta are stepping in to keep a well-known country store open after its owner was brutally beaten last month.

Community members say the store and Bob Terry are too special to lose. They've helped run the store and raise funds for Terry's hospital bills. He's at home recovering from the attack.

At Terry's Country Store, big, pink open signs are up. A few new ones have well wishes for the man residents say gave everything he could to his customers.

"He always helped everybody," said Patricia Miller, Terry's friend.

People like Miller are helping Terry. Along with taking meat and cheese orders or manning the cash register, Miller is also filling everyone in on Terry's condition.

"He's healing. He's very weak, but he's doing excellent," said Miller.

There is a collection bucket to help with Terry's bills, and several customers are trying to do all they can to keep his store up and running.

"I've had more people come in and say we'll do whatever we can to try to keep this store open," said Miller.

Miller says Terry prides himself on having a small time country store, a thing of the past in most places. It's a place where you'll find convenience store staples like candy and grocery items.

"His saying or line is, ‘If he don't have it, you don't need it," said Miller.

"You can get most anything here from bolts, nuts, whatever you need he's got it," said Ronnie Durham, a regular customer.

More than that, customers appreciated how Terry always made them feel special.

"Each person that comes in here Bob greet them by name," said Miller.

And, everyone is eager for his return.

"I wish him well, and I hope he hurries up and gets back to work," said Durham.

There will be a benefit pool tournament for Terry on Saturday, Nov. 5  at the filling station at 2217 Williamson Road. You can call 540-362-2185 for more information.
