The Rush of Election Day by Scott Wilson

Tuesday marks one of the busiest days of the year for us in the news business. It's also become one of my favorite days of the year. We're talking about Election Day.

Election Day is always a big event in the newsroom, even if there aren't a whole lot of local races of interest like this year. We hunker down with some pizza and bring up the State Board of Elections website and get ready to hit refresh. We work in teams to read each other the latest numbers every few minutes and make sure that what we have running on our air and what we have on the web are up to date.

The other interesting aspect is coordinating all of our reporters, who are out at different campaigns. They are trying to find out the numbers as well, calling us for updates. A lot of times the candidates are finding out the results from our reporters. Then once the votes are in it's a matter of figuring out when the candidate is going to appear to speak and how we'll be able to get that sound on the air in time for our 11:00 show. We always root for an early end to election night, but sometimes best laid plans don't always work out. In my four years at WSET, we've had some exciting races: Garrett vs. Valentine, Goode vs. Perriello. Hopefully this year will bring out one or two more to add to the list.
