Appomattox Co., VA - The city of Pamplin hopes a new grant and new look will bring Main Street back to life.
Virginia Tech's Community Design Assistance Center is giving about a $5,000 grant to add greenery and signs to the two downtown entrances.
When the old Railroad left, business deserted the old tobacco town. It's one of 30 places profiled in a recent book called "Lost Communities of Virginia."
The mayor says bike and foot traffic on the High Ridge Trail is giving new hope to Pamplin's downtown. He doesn't mind being called a "Lost Community."
"They wrapped us up with that title," said Mayor Bob Mitchell. "They can give us any title they want. It's what we do here that will make the difference."
Mitchell hopes the fresh look will encourage shop and restaurant owners to relocate downtown.
