Carter's Call for January 11, 2012

Posted:

It's been more than a week now since Virginia Tech's narrow overtime loss to Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. But fans are still talking about the controversial Danny Coale play in the end zone.

Personally, I think he made a sensational catch, and it should have been a touchdown as it was originally called on the field. Yes, the nose of the ball did touch the ground, but Coale was able to get his arm underneath to make it look like a legitimate catch. I surely didn't see overwhelming evidence on any of the replays that would make me change the call on the field. It should never have come down to that one play or call for the Hokies, they outgained the Wolverines more than 2-to-1 in total yards. But again the Hokies come up just short in a BCS game.

The ACC again struggled mightily in bowl games, an overall 2-and-6 mark with Florida State and N.C. State the only winners. Clemson was the last ACC team to play in the postseason and promptly got BLOWN OUT by West Virginia 70-33.

With college football in the books, now we can turn full attention to basketball. UVa is off to its best start in 30 YEARS at 14-and-1, the Cavs have a tough test at Duke Thursday night. The Hokies are struggling early in the ACC at 0-and-2 with losses to Wake Forest on the road and Florida State at home, they play at Boston College Saturday. You don't want to dig an early hole in the ACC, it can be mighty tough to climb out.

Liberty needs a win in the Big South in the worst of ways. The Flames host Radford Thursday night, two teams having tough years.

Radford has lost 13 in a row, LU has dropped five straight. Both teams shooting for their first Big South win.

Our high school basketball show, Full Court Press, is off and running in its fourth season. Be sure and join us each Friday just after 11:15 p.m. for lots of highlights and scores, our Player and Cheerleaders of the Week, the Trifecta and more. Dan River and Amherst County two of the boys teams off to great starts this year, Floyd County and James River two girls teams to definitely keep an eye on.

And if you've had a wisdom tooth taken out recently, I feel your pain! I had one taken out Monday that had really given me fits the last couple of weeks. I'm so happy to have that tooth gone.
