Lynchburg, VA- Runners love Lynchburg for its trails and challenging races. Now the Hill City is getting some national attention.
The Road Runners Club of America designated Lynchburg as the 2011 Outstanding Runner Friendly Community. The city beat out 16 other Runner Friendly Communities across the country.
City officials celebrated on Tuesday with the Lynchburg Road Runners Club, which was recognized for its role in promoting running. Road Runners officials say the Hill City was chosen for its infrastructure, races and support of running programs.
"We're not looking at the biggest cities with the biggest pocketbooks. We're really looking at communities that are working together to make running happen regardless of the community size," said Jean Knaack, executive director of RRCA.
"We've known for a long time that Lynchburg is a great community to run. And I'm glad that now the whole nation will get to know it," said Kevin Shroyer, race director of the Point of Honor 5k.
Lynchburg joins Monterey, California as only the second community to win the recognition.
