Children's Multi-Tasking Could Affect Their Social Development

Posted:

Children are spending a lot of time multi-tasking between gadgets like YouTube, Facebook, TV and texting.

Now a new survey shows these things could be a big problem when it comes to socializing.

The study published by Stanford University surveyed more than 3,500 girls between ages 8 and 12.

Researchers found those who spend all their time on the gadgets were least likely to develop normal social tendencies.

Dr. Bianca Sumutka at Lynchburg College says parents can do a lot to curb the issue.

"I think they need to teach their children to be good consumers of technology and set restrictions. The other issue is that parents have to be good models themselves. If you don't want your child to constantly be on their device, then you need to not be on your iPhone or Blackberry," she said.

Researchers couldn't figure out an exact number of hours your kids should spend interacting through technology. But they say social skills are typically only learned when children are engaged and making eye contact.
