George and Joy Harper

Posted:

World War II and a 3 cent stamp formed a lasting love.

George Harper's plane was shot down in January of 1945. Everyone but George and his friend David made it out safely. George was injured, but sadly David died when his parachute wouldn't open.

George spent months recuperating then eventually made it to Texas and decided to talk to David's widow while he was there, to talk to her about him, his death and what he knew since he was the last to see him alive.

She appreciated the visit. George sent Joy a Christmas card that year, then another the next. This one asked how she was getting along, and she replied she had started dating again. They started corresponding by mail for the next 5 months. In June of 1947 she went to New York to visit him and his family, and he asked her to marry him that weekend. This June they will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary.
