They met in prison and found the bonds of love.
John was a treatment program supervisor and Bianca was a rehabilitation counselor. They both believed they could help inmates learn how to be successful after prison and believed those inmates who wanted to be something could share their stories with young people to keep them from following the same path.
So John created a program to do that. John and Bianca became friends outside the prison walls and eventually began dating. On December 14, 1991 they were married. But Bianca noticed a change in her husband. He was tired all the time. She urged him to have a physical at prison, and they told him he needed to see a doctor ASAP. It turns out he had a brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation.)
During the life-saving surgery, John died on the table and then came back to life. But he was comatose for two and a half months. Yet during that time, Bianca knew he was still alive inside. When she was in the room, the monitors showed a stronger heart beat then when she was out of the room.
John finally returned to the living, and 20 years later they are still going strong. They believe they learned the power of unconditional love and used the lessons they themselves have taught so many -- if inmates could overcome the obstacles, so could they.
