Carter's Call for February 8, 2012

Another Super Bowl Lives Up to its Name!

We lucked out again over the weekend, another exciting Super Bowl matchup that actually went down to the final play to decide the winner.

You gotta hand it to the Giants. This was a 7-and-7 team in mid-December, a team that lost twice to the Redskins, they weren't sure they would even MAKE the playoffs! There was plenty of talk that coach Tom Coughlin might be fired. So all the Giants did was get hot at just the right time, then win their next six games and a second Super Bowl title in five years.

Were the Giants the best overall team this year? No.

But they turned it on when they needed to, and in the playoffs, they WERE the best team.

I think most everybody will agree the Patriots' Bill Belichick is one of the league's top coaches. But did you notice in the Super Bowl postgame NBC had to end its broadcast without getting a live interview with Belichick? The announcers said Belichick was still in the locker room talking with his team. Belichick should have shown more class, come out and done the interview. By not coming out, he looked like a poor loser.

Tuesday was a big day for Lynchburg city high school football. Both E.C. Glass and Heritage announced their new head coaches for the coming season. E.C. Glass has hired Ben Martin, who's coached the past four years at Appomattox County. Martin led the Raiders to their first playoff wins since 1979 in his four years.

Heritage has hired former William Campbell coach Brad Bradley as its new head coach. Bradley won two state titles at William Campbell, then returned Patrick Henry to respectability before coaching this past season at Amelia County, where he also served as athletic director. He took an Amelia team that had never won a playoff game all the way to the state semifinals.

Both Martin and Bradley are proven winners and look to be great hires for Glass and Heritage.

And I've got to give a birthday shout-out to one of my favorite people in the world. My Dad celebrates #85 this Thursday, February 9!

I love you Dad!
