Madison Heights., VA - Hundreds turned out for the funeral of Amherst County High School student Brittni Coffey Thursday. Coffey died in a car accident Sunday on Route 1-30 after over correcting and hitting an SUV head on.
The service in Madison Heights was packed, and according to the funeral director, Wednesday night's visitation broke a record at Whitten Funeral Home. He says at least 1,200 people came to pay their respects.
She might not have been known worldwide, but in this town Coffey was pretty close to famous.
"With the exception of Dr. Falwell, that was the largest I've ever worked. This was the biggest certainly out here in Madison Heights," said Paul Whitten, the funeral director."
The parking lots overflowed, and the chapel was filled with people standing shoulder to shoulder.
"She loved everybody and made everybody feel like they were the most important person and everybody loved her," said Lauren Clark, who knew Brittni.
"She just always made you smile and could get along with anybody and relate to any situation, even if she couldn't she'd be there and try to help you and try to make you happier," said Jackson Clark, Brittni's friend.
Family and friends stood up to reflect on the beautiful life she lived. Jackson Clark was one of Brittni's best of friends. Only a few months ago they attended a ring dance together.
"She looked beautiful and I just remember the two of them being so happy," said Lauren Clark.
Jackson remembers one of the last things she said to him right before a wrestling tournament.
-"She wished me luck and told me that she couldn't come to that one but said she wanted to come see me at states."
With states in two week, Jackson still plans to take Brittni with him. He's going to wrap his wrists with a star on it, which is Brittni's middle name.
"I know that she's going to be there, and she'll be watching. Not the way I wanted her to be, but she'll be closer than ever and that means a lot to me," said Jackson Clark.
Some of Brittni's friends are also planning to meet on Sunday and drive to the wreck site. They're calling it "Ride in Memory of Brittni Coffey."
