A running shot by Roderick Pearson at the buzzer proved the difference for Oral Roberts (22-5, 14-1) in a 76-74 victory over IUPUI (10-16, 4-10) Thursday night at the Mabee Center. The shot finished off a wild game that included a 4-point play by Alex Young to send the game to the extra period.
Dominique Morrison scored 23 points, 21 of which came in the second half, while Michael Craion, Warren Niles and Steven Roundtree each had 11 points to pace the Golden Eagles. ORU shot just 45.6 percent (26-57) for the game, but hit three of five shot attempts in the overtime period. The Golden Eagles also had just a 3 of 13 mark from 3-point range, but out-scored IUPUI 34-22 in the paint.
Young led the Jaguars with a game-high 34 points, including 6-of-9 3-point attempts. Young also had seven rebounds to lead IUPUI. Christian Siakam and Stephen Thomas each chipped in 11 points in the loss.
It wasn't until the 15:51 mark in the first half that either team scored a field goal. But in the second half, ORU responded, quickly grabbing the lead by scoring the first 12 points of the half.
ORU to stretched the lead to 46-35 after a Jake Lliteras jumper, but the Jaguars would not go away.
It looked like a two possession game with under a minute to go, but Young had other thoughts as he converted a 4-point play to tie the game at 65-65 with less than 35 seconds to go in the game.
ORU had the last possession and had two shots for the win but came up empty on both, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, it was ORU who again took control from the start of the period, scoring the first four points of the half. Clinging to a three point lead with under a minute to go, Siakam hit a layup and after a Golden Eagle turnover, Morrison fouled Chiles to prevent the fast-break layup and keep ORU up by one for the moment.
Although it fouled Morrison out of the game, the move paid off as Chiles missed the second free throw, giving ORU the shot at the game winner with 19 seconds to go in a 74-74 game.
This time, ORU took advantage as Pearson drove to the basket, hung in the air and put up a floater that bounced around the rim and fell through, giving the Golden Eagles their second overtime win of the season.
The Golden Eagles will host Western Illinois as part of the Oral Roberts Homecoming festivities on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
