Danville, VA - It's been up and running for months, but Friday marked the formal launch of the next generation supercomputer in Danville.
State and local officials gathered in the old tobacco warehouse which was converted into the computer's new home. Government officials and representatives of Noblis, the company that runs the supercomputer, were on hand. There was also a tour of the facility and an explanation of the computer's capabilities.
Phillip Hayes is one of Noblis' first employees and a Danville native and G.W. High School grad. He said he couldn't be happier to be back working in his home city.
"I would never expect in a million years that I'd come back home to actually do something I love, I actually went to school for and actually do my work here in Danville," he said.
The supercomputer connects over 1,500 miles of broadband fiber from Atlanta to Washington D.C.
