Danville, VA -- The City of Danville has to decide whether to tear down abandoned apartments or have them renovated.

Cabin Lake Apartment Complex has had a series of fires and utility issues over the past several years, leaving them now completely vacant. Following with the city's derelict ordinance, the city gave the 17 owners 90 days to decide if they would renovate or tear it down, and Tuesday was the deadline. Since the owners did not make a decision, it's now up to the city, and the cost will be on the owners.

"This particular development has been vacant, abandoned and derelict for many years. And it's been a problem for the neighborhood, and obviously it's a problem for the city," says Earl Reynolds, community development director.

City officials say that the most cost effective solution will be to tear the apartments down. They will discuss it at the next meeting on February 21.
