Lynchburg, VA - The man accused of shooting and killing a man almost a year ago took the stand Wednesday.

Gregory Kittrell, 22, is charged with shooting and killing Brian Patterson on February 19, 2011 at Lynchburg's Fraternal Order of Police.

Kittrell said the night of the incident he was "afraid and scared." He went on to say he was defending himself.

Kittrell also said that Patterson was about 30 pounds heavier than him. He says the fight began after Patterson bumped into him. He said a few words were exchanged before Patterson allegedly punched Kittrell in the face. That's when he says the fight started.

Kittrell and other witnesses claim Patterson put Kittrell in a headlock and a group of at least four other people allegedly began hitting Kittrell in his ribs and face.

Kittrell says he was able to break free and that his 9mm Smith and Wesson hit the floor, so he scrambled to get it and then shot Patterson.

The defense said an incident his junior year of high school may have triggered Kittrell's rage that night. Kittrell says he was attacked at a football game and was hit so hard, he lost full vision in his right eye over time.

Kittrell made a point to say he regretted what happened.

Closing arguments just wrapped up and the jury is set to begin deliberations.
