Caswell Co., NC -- A 13-year-old boy is dead after the he jumped in a reservoir for a swim and drowned, according to officials from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office.

Caswell County emergency crews were called Tuesday evening to the reservoir behind the Yanceyville Water Plant in North Carolina.

His classmates say he loved basketball and playing around with an oversized tennis ball during gym class. They say he would always give you a high-five as you pass him in the hallway.

Ask anyone what they remember about Demion Farmer, and you will always get the same answer.

"He was always smiling. He was always laughing at something. He was never in a bad mood," says Johnson and Dylan Willis, a friend of Demion.

But his smile now sparks tears as family and friends mourn his early death.

"Knowing that Demion is gone and he won't be back. That is tough for everybody, particularly those of us who were close to him. It's tough for all of us to deal with," says Lamont Dixon, the principal at N.L. Dillard Middle School.

Demion was with friends when he decided to go for an impromptu swim Tuesday night here at the reservoir. He jumped in but couldn't get out. The sheriff's office says his friends tried to pull him out, but couldn't. Even though crews from Caswell County, Yanceyville and Danville tried to save him, it was too late.

"It was terrible. I missed him, I couldn't. I missed him walking through the door and everything….couldn't see him at the house anymore. I miss having him as a brother," says Kishia Plunkett, his sister.

His twin sister Kdayza says when she heard the news, it was the worst night of her life.

"My Grandma started busting out crying and they want to pick my mom up and my mom started crying. We heard that he had gone," said Kdayza.

But the hardest part is knowing that a middle school student was taken so soon.

"It's not fair at all. They didn't get to live the good part of their life," said Johnson and Willis.

The sheriff's office says they do not suspect foul play. Meanwhile, the school has provided counseling for those who need it.
