Update: 12:45 p.m.:
Finally, for those who have been waiting all winter it looks like the first accumulating snow of the season will arrive to our area this weekend.
A storm system will continue to strengthen and take shape across Texas Friday and the Gulf Coast Saturday. This storm moves our way and brings increasing clouds Saturday with rain developing by early Sunday morning. Although the storm will begin as rain for most areas, as the storm travels by to our south, winds will shift from the north allowing colder air to drain into the state. As a result, rain will change over to snow in most locations by Sunday afternoon.
Because of the wet ground, the snow will have a hard time sticking to roadways, especially at first. Right now we are calling for 2-3" of snow, with most of the accumulation on grassy and elevated surfaces, in the Greater Lynchburg area.
Areas north and west of Lynchburg may see the change occur more quickly, so 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible in much of Amherst, Rockbridge and western Bedford counties. Highest amounts of snow will be in the western highlands of the state where more than 6 inches are possible for places like Covington. Southside Virginia, including Danville and South Boston, look to see mainly rainy, but a brief period of wet snow is likely. Some spots could get a quick coating to up to two inches of snow on grassy and elevated surfaces.
Most roadways will be wet and warm at first, which will cut back on accumulations on the roads right away. However, if the snow is heavy enough, conditions may deteriorate later Sunday night. The snowfall totals can still change before the storm arrives, so stay tuned to ABC 13 for the latest.
