Museum Features Local Black History

South Boston, VA - The Museum of Fine Art and History of South Boston and Halifax County is sharing some remarkable history with the community.

In honor of Black History Month, they've dedicated an entire exhibit to African American men that fought for the Union Army during the Civil War.

All of the soldiers they feature were Halifax County natives. There were over 100 of them, and their army records were donated by a friend of the museum who researched them from the National Archives.

Organizers say the exhibit is unique and gives some insight into a piece of local history.

"They're all natives of Halifax County. Some were free, some were not. And they moved on, some joined up in North Carolina, some in Tennessee, some in Alabama, just various areas," said Beth Coates, the director of the museum.

Organizers are hoping the exhibit will allow folks to discover family members that fought in the war.
