VDOT officials could have a very busy weekend ahead of them, and they say crews are ready for whatever winter throws their way.
Plow trucks and VDOT workers are all on standby for this weekend.
Officials across Virginia had a conference call Friday morning to talk about how much snow this system is expected to bring.
Here in Lynchburg, VDOT has 100 dump trucks and 50 contractors ready to clear area roads. They were checking equipment Friday, attaching plows and spreaders and even loading some trucks up with salt.
Paying for it all shouldn't be a problem. Lynchburg's district has used barely any of the $4.5 million in its budget for winter preparedness.
The weather this weekend is supposed to start out as rain and possibly transition to snow, which has VDOT handling this storm a little differently.
"Normally if we had a storm of this significance we would put down brine, anti-icing material before this storm starts. But with the rain coming in that makes that stuff ineffective, so we're not gonna do that and thus save the money and the time," said Tim Wiles with VDOT maintenance.
Officials say their motto heading into this weekend is, "Be prepared, expect the worst and hope for the best."
