Danville, VA - At the YMCA in Danville folks came out for some African Drumming & Dancing.
Nguzo Saba African American Dance Group was founded in 1993. The name stands for the 7 principles of Kwanzaa.
They perform 3 to 4 times a week at schools, churches and workshops.
They also have classes for new students.
Some people come to her classes as a form of exercise and become so good that they end up performing.
They use a lot of energy and do a lot of sweating, but they have fun.
Ages range from about 5 to 63 years old and no one complains.
"We do a lot of storytelling we do a lot of traditional singing, of West African singing- dancing- drumming, we try to teach not only the actual dances and the rhythms and the words, but we want to teach the way of life, the way that we should treat each other" says Alice Walker, Coordinator of Nguzo Saba.
Walker wants people to know that it doesn't matter if you dance fast or slow, once you feel the rhythms, your body reacts.
To find out how you can join the dancers, contact Walker at (434) 250-0925 or email nguzosaba@comcast.net.
