Roanoke, VA - The area's first major snowfall allowed Virginia Department of Transportation crews to put their snow-clearing plan into effect, and they say they are happy with the effort.
This is the second winter season VDOT has used multiple contractors to tackle the job. This modified approach comes after what the company felt was a less than adequate performance by the former contract holder, ICA.
In all, four contractors are used to keep the roads clear.
"Considering the snowfall stopped around one or two this morning and the interstate was in minor condition by 4 a.m., that's pretty good the amount of snowfall we had and how it was coming down," said Jason Bond with VDOT.
ICA lost their contract following several back-to-back snowstorms that hit the area over the 2009-2010 winter season that left motorists stranded overnight on I-81.
