Bedford Co., VA- A section of Route 221 in Bedford County has quite a reputation for accidents and fender benders. Now the Virginia Department of Transportation is setting its sights on fixing it.
On Tuesday, VDOT will hold a public meeting to share their plans for the intersection of Route 221 and Goode Station Road.
A lot of residents are eager to hear about these plans. Many say some of the accidents at this intersection could have been prevented with some road improvements.
The busy intersection of Route 221 and Goode Station Road is known for having a lot of fast moving traffic and something many have witnessed too often.
"I have seen many accidents. I've been standing right here and seen accidents. I've seen cars run off the road," said Kenny Terry, a Goode resident.
Residents say cars routinely speed through this intersection, and it's hard to see cars at the crest of the hill.
"I think people just don't realize just how bad the intersection is, and as much traffic that comes in and out of this store. They just don't slow down or pay attention, "said Lisa Ryan, a Goode resident.
Part of VDOT's plan would add turning lanes and install a raised median, which is something many wish had been done years ago.
"Now it's taken several people to get killed or get hurt before something is being done. I think it's a little late I wish that they had done it earlier," said Ryan.
But not everyone is sure the price tag associated with the project or the project itself is the way to solve the problem here.
"I think the state is making a mistake spending millions of dollars to do this correction. I don't think that's the issue. I don't think the road is the issue. I think it's the lack of attention. You've got more inexperienced drivers on the roads now," said Leonard Craig, a Goode resident.
VDOT is holding a public meeting on the improvement project Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Goode Rescue Squad.
VDOT officials say it will take a while for these improvements to come. They plan to advertise construction bids in 2014, and they expect the project will cost $1 million.
