Danville, VA -- Danville's George Washington High School may get a new track. There's a community effort underway to raise money for a new track and field complex.

Students say that George Washington High School's track and field team advances to more regional and state-wide competitions than any other sports team there, but they have the worst facilities. In fact, their coach says it is dangerous.

Wrapped around the George Washington High School football field, a seven lane, run-down track is more frustrating than functional.

The state of the track forces athletes to avoid running in certain lanes, and they have to travel for every single meet.

"It's very frustrating because we always have to travel places. And that costs us money," said Ryan Comper, a student.

It's been 12 years since GW has been able to host a track meet. From when a kid starts school until they graduate, they haven't been able to watch a track meet in their own back yard.

"The track is obviously in pretty bad shape, but the field it's got some issues too," said Comper.

So now there's an effort to raise private funds for a new outdoor artificial turf field, with a jumbo screen, surrounded by a brand-new eight lane track, something this school and this community desperately need.

"We don't want someone to think it is just about football. We'll be able to do soccer, we'll be able to do hockey, we'll be able to have some type of concerts," says Philip Campbell, chairman of Complex Project.

They hope the new track and field will reach beyond the high school.

"If we could start having tack meets in Danville, that means that would inspire younger kids to come out and watch the track meets," says Robert Marshall, track coach.

In order to build this complex, they will need to raise $2 million. They plan to look for it from businesses, alumni and other community members.
