Lynchburg, VA - SOL testing may not be until May, but experts say now is the time to help your child prepare. In this week's Mommy Monday, we have advice from experts on what you can do in your own home.

Our kids are really busy right now, getting ready to take their SOL tests. Ethel Coles with Lynchburg City Schools says you play a big role in your child's success come test day.

"It's a lot of hard work. The state requires a lot in making sure every child succeeds. For our teachers it is a stressful time," Coles said. "Parental involvement is vital."

You could say Hilda Stevens with Successful Innovations wrote the book when it comes to preparing your child for testing. She works with schools and parents to get the job done, and she's sharing her simple steps with us.

"We want them to help relieve the stress and anxiety their child may experience during that testing time," Stevens said. "We suggest they start a routine of rest and exercise and that can begin now."

That includes 9-10 hours of sleep a night and 60 minutes of good exercise every day.

"If we allow them to get the rest and exercise they need their brain remains active, they'll be learning and the fact that they can retrieve that information later is what's so valuable for their test taking skills," Stevens said.

When testing day comes, don't forget a good breakfast and making sure your child gets to school on time. When you do all of that, it makes all the difference on test day.

"They seem like minor things, but they are very important to the start of a child's day and making sure the test is the focal point and not all of the extras," Coles said.

Getting that sleep schedule is really important, especially with the time change. Experts say it can be deceiving, and kids often stay up later because there is more daylight. But they say this is the perfect time to nip that in the bud.
