Lynchburg, VA - Sunday marked the 10-year anniversary of the Jamerson YMCA, and many businesses in Wyndhurst credit the Y with their own success.

Since the Y opened 10 years ago, places in Wyndhurst are filling up. Businesses say the Y was in Wyndhurst first, and the organization is known to bring families and people together.

The fun rang through the halls of the Jamerson Y.

"The celebration's phenomenal. Everyone's taking part in it...cake, so we're having a great time," said Jamerson Branch Director Corey Jeffcoat.

A decade in the making.

"It has gone by really, really fast. This area here was only pasture land say more than 10 years ago, but now you can see how it's progressed and of course the YMCA has been an anchor here," said Ellen Jamerson.

It has progressed so much that businesses seem to be flourishing. Several local apartment complexes in the area say business could not be better.

"City Place Apartments is doing absolutely great. We have 100 % occupancy, which is wonderful when you're looking at 52 apartments," said Kathy Hudson, City Place Apartments property manager.

And they credit the Y for some of their success.

"It brings tons of visitors to Wyndhurst daily," Hudson said.

Consignment shop, Salvaged agrees.

"We've gotten more out of town people because they'll be in for whatever event is going on at the Y," said Salvaged Creative Director Brooke Harding.

Salvaged opened last August. In that short period of time, they have already outgrown their store and are looking to move soon.

"It's the same building that Sweet Peas is in which will be good because its' our sister store," said Harding. "It will be like three times the size."

Even though the Jamerson Y is celebrating 10 years, the YMCA of Central Virginia is 156 years old. Jeffcoat says as a whole, it serves 22,000 members.
