Lynchburg, VA - March Madness wasn't all about basketball. At the Lynchburg Humane Society it was about adopting a new pet.
Some animals were free and others cost less during the three-day event. This happens every year thanks to a grant from the ASPCA.
This year 58 animals - 20 dogs and 28 cats - found new homes. Last year, only 17 pets were adopted so it was a huge increase.
But workers say about 200 animals still need a home.
"We do have a lot of adult dogs if anyone is looking to foster an adult dog, give it a break from the shelter. We do keep our dogs until they can find a home and some have been here for a little while," said Kim Haywood, development and outreach coordinator.
The Lynchburg Humane Society also needs food donations and volunteers.
