Halifax Co., VA --  April is Halifax County Cancer Association Awareness Month. The organization works year-round to help local cancer patients with a lot of their expenses. They provide gas vouchers for often far away doctor appointments and help with medical costs.

The Halifax County Cancer Association is working with local businesses and organizations to have fundraisers. They are also doing something you can't miss when driving through Halifax: they are decorating the town for a good cause.

When Steve Henderson died in December from lung cancer, a community lost a loved one.

"Our whole world turned upside down," says Missy Henderson, his wife.

So businesses and houses displayed white ribbons in his memory.

"Every lamp post, and every business and a lot of homes in town had white ribbons," says Bill Granger, from Making Ribbons.

Now for the month of April, purple ribbons will litter the town to support Halifax County Cancer Association Awareness Month.

"We're just asking people to put out purple ribbons on their mail boxes, lamp posts, wherever at their home. Just to help blanket the whole county with purple this month," said Sharon Blosser, the director of patient services at Halifax County Cancer Association.

"I have got 500 yards of ribbon. And I will tie it until they are all gone. And I will see if I can get more," said Granger.

The Association has been running for more than 50 years, but they say not everyone knows it.  They hope this month will bring in more than just money.

"To help the community be aware of what we do and why we are here to help," said Blosser.

Still, the thousands of dollars they hope to raise will make a difference for hundreds of patients.

"It's a really daunting thought when you are facing a life threatening situation plus the financial effect it is going to have on your family," said Teressa Davis, a cancer patient.

People like Teressa Davis, who marks this April as a year of being cancer-free.

"We have to keep living and hopefully this will raise funds to help other families," said Henderson.

They are selling the ribbons for $5 each at the Halifax County Cancer Association. All of the money will be donated to the Halifax County Cancer Association.
