Danville, VA- April is Autism Awareness Month and Averett University is celebrating by shining a spotlight each night.

The Danville campuses Main Hall will be lit up in blue to help raise awareness on the subject that is a growing health concern.

According to national statistics, one in 88 children are affected by Autism, but in our region that number is even higher at roughly one in 70.

Averett wants and to be a leader in Autism education.

"In today's classrooms nearly every teacher has children with Autism in their classrooms, but nearly every one of them will tell you that they have had very few opportunities to learn how to best work with children with Autism" said Tiffany Franks, president of Averett University

Averett encourages parents and support groups to meet this month at the Carrington Autism Awareness Center for a series of events and discussions.
